I did some testing to figure out the exact conditions in which the "higher gain" option in the settings file works, and the conclusion is:

No, it has nothing to do with the region.

I have GMD=1 and when switching Direct Source on and off, I can clearly hear the increase in volume with Direct Source on.

With GMD=1, try enabling and disabling Direct Source, and you'll hear the difference - or just test GMD=0 vs GMD=1 with Direct Source enabled.

I think that the higher gain is GMD=1, not GMD=2.

It seems that higher gain only works with Direct Source enabled.

WM1A to 1Z firmware didn't manage to fully switch a 1A to the 1Z sound.

"Warm" from the Walkman One firmware is the same as Midnight v2 (for 1A).

I clicked that link and it works fine for me.

This is an issue with the first release of Walkman One, which I then fixed.

There's nothing changed with .cue handling.

If I'm not mistaken, .cue with FLAC doesn't work, but .cue with APE, or maybe some other formats, like WAV, should work.

Dawn v2.1, integrated in Walkman One, is at least a bit closer to the DMP than previous iterations.

I see in your signature "FW Ver.: DMP portable Musical", but that is not firmware per se, but a tuning mod, and it doesn't achieve similar results to actual custom firmware.

DMP-WM1 FEv2 (especially with Plus mode) gives WM1A a sound better than the stock WM1Z sound.

I will also experiment with a firmware that gets the 1Z stock sound on a 1A, for curious people.

It's simple, just listen for a while in the Classic mode, like for 30 minutes. After that, switch to the Plus mode and see if it sounds better or not.

Line out via WM port only works with the smaller players (like A55/A45/A35), but otherwise it's not connected for the WM1/ZX300 players.
